Ways to Save Water Throughout a Drought In America

by Dr. Jonathan Doyle - Updated September 02, 2021
A large portion of the United States is currently in the midst of a severe drought, reaching historic proportions. These temperatures are often hitting the highest levels, gripping half of the US with heat waves and drought. In California alone the situation has reached severe levels unparalleled by historical weather events. As the events continue to unfold, many are left wondering, how can you prepare for a drought in America?
In regard to the Colorado, the federal government recently declared the first ever water shortage. This declaration triggered mandatory water cuts for states throughout the Southwest portion of the US. Undoubtedly, the climate change Americans are currently facing is real. It has been predicted that this drought has the potential to last for many months. Though drought is part of the annual cycle, climate change has transformed the cycle into something many don’t recognize.

What Lead to America’s Drought?

There are two factors considered the pioneers of this bizarre drought, including: high tempts, and dry soil. With the western regions largely dependent upon melted water, produced by snowpack, dry soil can have a large impact on resulting water. This is because water from snowpack typically flows to reservoirs, through soil and broad land. However, considering the current condition of dry soil in western America, there isn’t enough water in store. As temperatures continue to rise, soil will continue to remain dry, or dry out even further. As snowpack melts, the resulting water will simply be absorbed into the ground, before I ever has the chance to reach a reservoir.

How Might You Prepare for a Drought?

With water facilities and governments alike functioning in water crisis mode, the attempt at conserving water has never been in such effect. The initial consequences of drought may not be felt by citizens as of yet, however, farmers are certainly paying the price. This doesn’t mean citizens have zero responsibility for the situation, even if they feel no consequences. The beginnings of a water shortage is simply part of a larger problem we will all face with time. Without water, farmers will have great difficulty in growing crops, which results in higher prices and lower stock at your local market. In the end, everyone will feel the burden of a prolonged drought. We have a few tips on how you can play your part in conserving water during America’s water crisis.

Outdoor Water Conservation

There are several ways to conserve water in the great outdoors, especially in terms of outdoor activities. Washing your car, for example, is one activity that wastes a great deal of water. Unless you have a Reverse Osmosis machine producing waste water, you may want to forego washing your car in a drought. It would, however, take a great deal of time to collect enough waste water to wash your car. This goes for watering your lawn, too. If you must water your lawn, it’s best to water once a week, or even less during a drought.

Indoor Water Conservation

Checking periodically for leaks around your house is an important task during a drought. This can be done by recording the reading on your water meter. If the reading changes within a period of 30 minutes after water use, you know there is a leak to look for. Once you have determined the presence of a leak, you should begin investigating. Consider this: one drop of leaking water wastes 2,700 gallons of water each year. Even turning off the faucet while you brush your teeth could save gallons of precious water every day.
Secondly, before you pour water down the drain, consider whether it could serve another purpose. If you are using water to soak your produce, it may be used to flush toilets or water your plants (if it doesn’t have soap residue). A Reverse Osmosis water purification system produces waste water, which can serve many uses as well.

Remain Properly Hydrated

Keeping your body properly hydrated will go great lengths in preparing for the worst during a drought. You don’t want to allow yourself to become dehydrated, especially in drought conditions. Allowing yourself to remain in a permanent state of dehydration can lead to irreversible damage throughout your body. What are some of the signs to watch out for, and how can it be prevented?

Dehydration Symptoms

Small symptoms can be a sign of bigger problems. This includes dry mouth, dry and chapped lips, a decreased amount of saliva, dark yellow urine, as well as a greatly decreased urine output.

Keep Hydrated

Remaining hydrated is important all year round, especially in the midst of a drought. However, in the case of dehydration, you must be careful not to drink too much water at once. This could lead to water intoxication, which causes other health problems throughout your body.
A water filter pitcher is a great way to keep safe, healthy drinking water on hand. They easily fit into the door of your refrigerator, or even on a kitchen counter. When you have drinking water readily on hand, you will be more likely to consume water on a regular basis.

Watch The Drain Ratio Before Purchasing Your Water Filter

Individuals concerned with quality drinking water often have a water filtration system of some sort installed within their home. Whether it is a whole house system, faucet water filer, water filter pitcher, or the like, many homeowners understand the importance of high quality water filtration. Even an RO system is easily obtained, through many brick and mortar retailers.
A Reverse Osmosis water filter may be a cost-effective solution for many families, while others don’t appreciate the waste water it creates. Your traditional RO system produces a ratio of 3:1, meaning one cup of pure water costs 3 cups of waste water. Although this waste water can serve a multitude of purposes, it’s simply too demanding for many individuals. This is not always the case when you invest in a Waterdrop Reverse Osmosis system.
A Waterdrop RO system is more intelligent than other competitors, with creative flair, and eco-friendly design. Our tankless design inhibits the harboring of dangerous bacteria, compared to traditional tank systems. This further decreases the waste water output, down to 2:1 – even 1:1 in many cases. What RO systems does Waterdrop offer?

Waterdrop D6

Waterdrop’s D6 reverse osmosis water filter system utilizes a smart composite Reverse Osmosis filter. With an upgraded flow rate of 600 GPD, and a drain ratio of 1.5:1, this system conserves on waste water. The innovative internal pump provides a larger filter surface, for a filtration speed of 8 seconds per cup -- ideal for drinking and cooking alike. An improved drain ratio essentially means that 1.5 cups of pure water only produces 1 cup of wastewater, for a savings of 450%.

Waterdrop D4

save up to 300% of water
Waterdrop’s new product D4 system outperforms in terms of saving water, due to the use of a stronger internal pump. Featuring a 1:1 drain ratio, the Waterdrop D4 will help you save additional water resources, and lower your water bill at the same time. During a drought, having the Waterdrop D4 RO system within your household is something you can’t afford not to have – especially when saving water is important.
